London
Today was my most favourite day of holiday since Mum and Dad arrived. I slept in, had a late breakfast, and didn't do anything except take an afternoon stroll in the sun, while Mum cleaned the house and Dad ironed all my washing. Somehow, the natural order felt restored.
The Olds even rustled up the spirit to go to the tube station on their own and top up their Oyster (tube pass) cards, and do a little grocery shopping. Here's a couple of photos of them out and about today. I know this will just look like Mum and Dad doing the shopping to everyone else, but to me it's hilarious and kinda strange that they are walking around in my neighbourhood, which isn't somewhere I associate them with being in.
This evening, I took Mum and Dad to see Pygmalion (the play that the musical My Fair Lady was based on) at the Old Vic theatre, where John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier and Richard Burton once trod the boards. It was a beautiful summer evening, and they both got to have another ride on the tube (an experience they still love, strangely) and face the hordes of evening commuters at Waterloo Station at rush hour.
The play was great, and they loved it. Dad lamented the lack of straight theatre shows in Invercargill, while Mum just said how lucky they felt to be here. These comments are very humbling to me, as I go to the theatre all the time and forget sometimes how lucky I am to be able to enjoy London life all the time.
