Weekend in London

14 June 2008
London

After a horrific flight back from Vienna, which was three hours delayed and the plane filled with screaming babies and hyperactive Austrian teenagers, we took it easy on Friday, and just relaxed at my flat. Well, when I say "relaxed at my flat", I mean "Mum cleaned the house and Dad sat on the sofa watching TV". But hell, I got a clean house out of it, so I wasn't complaining.

We've been very lucky with the weather so far, with mostly gorgeously sunny days. On Friday night, we went to dinner at a little place down the road from my offices in Tower Hill, so Mum and Dad could have a little poke around my workplace. My offices are just opposite the Tower of London, and we arrived at around 7pm, just as one of the innumerable Jack the Ripper walking tours was getting started. Here they are:

On Saturday, after a leisurely breakfast, we headed to the Victoria & Albert Museum in South Kensington, a massive treasure chest of a museum, dedicated to the decorative arts - painting, sculpture, jewellery, textiles and design. Mum was impressed by the medieval religious section, some landscape oils by John Constable, and the medieval tapestries of hunting scenes. Dad was impressed by the tea rooms.

It's Sunday now, so Mum and Dad went to church, and we went to pick up a nice half leg of Welsh lamb. I'm typing, Dad is reading out extracts from the weekend newspapers to anyone who'll listen, and Mum is in the kitchen peeling carrots.

Lunch was delicious, as you can see.
